Migrant Education Program

San Benito High School District's Migrant Education Program (MEP) provides students and their families with support to reduce the educational disruption and challenges associated with repeated moves.

MEP provides:

  • Case management services;
  • After-school academies in English, math and social science;
  • After-school tutoring;
  • Work experience opportunities;
  • College and scholarship essay support;
  • School supplies, internet hot spots, and more.

In addition, the MEP speech and debate program provides students with opportunities to travel and participate in tournaments during the school year. Each spring, MEP students visit colleges and universities. When the school year ends, the MEP program continues to provide services, including:

  • Summer school
  • College boot camp
  • Work experience
  • Academic counseling

Gonzalo Montero

“Through this program, I was able to secure employment opportunities, school materials, SAT/ACT study resources and fee vouchers, and even the life-changing opportunity to travel to the East Coast to participate in Capitol Hill activities and visit colleges. As a first-generation student from an economically disadvantaged background, these opportunities were not just helpful, they were transformative. Today, as a college graduate from UCLA, and a professional working in the tech industry, I can say with absolute certainty that the migrant program was instrumental to my success.”

Anaceli Arredondo

“The migrant program gave me leadership opportunities. I was able to represent the migrant program at the superintendent advisory board meetings, which put me in spaces I normally wouldn’t have been in and let my voice be heard. On top of that, they offered college prep workshops and introduced me to opportunities like fly-in programs for schools such as Johns Hopkins. I even got to work and earn money over the summer through the program, which taught me how to budget and manage finances early on.”
